Country

The J simply represents Japan, the country the car manufacturer operates in. Later Toyota's that were manufactured in the US have a letter designating the plant, in witch it was produced in, after the year code.

Company / Manufacturer

The T for Toyota. This character represents the manufacturer. I'm not sure what happens with 2 manufacturers with the same first letter. In conjunction with country there may be no interference.

Type

The 2 stands for Passanger Car. This Character differentiates between Cars trucks and other "types" of vehicles. Each manufacturer uses different characters.

Basic Model Code

Often refered to as the chassis code or chassis number The basic amodel code is used to refer to a specific model. Rear drive Starlets are often refered to as KP61s. The first letter is the engine series (4KC in this example). This is followed by the platform letter (KP61 designates a rear wheel drive Starlet platform). Then the 2-3 digit number is more specific designating between displacment engines or other changes not reflected somwere else in the codes. In the Case of the Starlet KP60, KP61, KP62 the numbers meaning are unknown at this time. Refering to the cars by there chassis number eliminates the confusion around different realease dates in the different markets.

Check Digit

Explanations are confusing at best. It seams to exists to prevent vehicles from have the same VIN#. Possibly because the year character eventually cycles.
