The Plan:

1700 lb Rear Wheel Drive Car + More HP = Fun.

The goal of this project is to create a car with stop light to stop light street racer power, and excellent handling for auto crossing. I will be swapping a 4agze, and an ae86 drivetrain into my starlet.

Toyota 4agze. A supercharged 1.6 liter 4 cylinder engine.

Here is a ruff order of what I'll do:

____Purchase and restore a Toyota Starlet. Get it inspected, tagged and legal on the road.

____Accomplish as many modifications as possible while still haveing the car ready for smog check.

________Fitting the car to myself

____________Race seats

____________Steering wheel and hub extension

____________Strip interior

____________Pedal modification

________Roll cage

________Suspension

________AE86 Strut swap

________Shocks and springs

____Pass smog with stock motor

____Swap motor drive train

________Cut floor to fit shifter

________Fabricate motor and transmision mounts

________Swap rear end

________Custom driveshaft

________Sort coolant lines, intake tubing, fuel, wiring

________Sort exhaust

____Further modification

________TRD Wide body kit

________Suspension refinment

________More power

As I have not completed this project I can only speculate on what exacally is needed for the 4agze motor swap. Bellow is a few of my thoughts on the subject.

  • A front clip with a 4agze - This seams to me to be the most effective way to obtain the motor. By getting a front clip from an JDM importer you get everything needed to run the engine except fuel tank and pump. This would save allot of hunting for hard to find things like ignitors and other sensors that may be missing on an engine alone.
  • T50 Transmission - Sourced from an AE86. This transmission will bolt up to a 4agze engine. The 4agze flywheel doesn't fit under the T50 bell housing so either a standard 4age flywheel must be used or modify the bellhousing to fit. I am unsure of what combination of clutch and pressure plate would fit and withstand the punishment.
  • Front drive engine to rear drive configuration - This brings up a few issues. There are some coolant lines that need to be modified so they don't interfere with the firewall. The standard rear drive 4age has a different collant block so that may also be used. The top mount intercooler won't fit under the hood so a hood scoop or a front mount intercooler with custom tubing would be needed. The supercharger inlet apparently can be unbolted and turned around to point towards the front of the car. The supercharger outlet is also an issue since it points towards the firewall. Modification of the orginal is possible or a custom made outlet could be used.
  • Rear end - There are some options with this component. My choice is a T283 from an AE86. This has factory Limited Slip, 4.30 gearing, and disc brakes. These apparently are hard to find. Also it is likely that a stock T283 would be worn out, as most AE86s found in junk yards or sold cheap as parts have high miles. Since a rebuild or new differential head are both around the same price sourcing a non-LSD (T282) and adding limited slip might be an option. These rears are slightly wider then the KP61 stock. Fender flares would probably be needed to fit wide wheels. I believe any new rear will have to have the mounting points changed to work with a Starlets'.
  • Driveshaft - A custom length shaft with appropriate yoke to fit the transmission and rear is needed.
